Clean compute

Clean energy did not become real because anyone promised harder. It became real when a certificate made the claim checkable: a wind farm generates a megawatt-hour, a certificate is minted alongside it, a registry retires it, and suddenly 'we run on clean power' is a statement with receipts. That plumbing took years to build, and it is why clean energy is now an ordinary line item instead of a slogan.

Computing is where energy was before the receipts. Demand from AI is growing faster than any grid it touches, every provider says the word 'sustainable', and not one of them can show you, for a specific job, what the grid was doing while it ran. The claims float free of the electrons.

There is a second cost floating even freer. Electricity arrives carrying a water bill that was paid upstream: cooling towers at gas and coal plants, evaporation off reservoirs. On the grid our meter watches first, that comes to roughly 313 gallons consumed for every megawatt-hour, before a single fan spins at the data center. A facility can dry-cool its own buildings. It cannot dry-cool the power plant. Run a gigawatt campus for a year and the upstream tab runs to billions of gallons, and no efficiency setting on the building touches it.

Aquadrio's answer is an umpire. The meter watches the grid a job actually ran on and makes one call per job: certified clean, or not certified. Certified means the hour cleared two bars at once: grid carbon intensity at or under 100 gCO₂/kWh, and the facility's own water use at or under 2.0 liters per kilowatt-hour. There is no partial credit, and no averaging away a dirty hour with a clean month. When a job earns the call, it mints a Renewable Compute Credit, one per GPU-hour, signed and independently checkable.

Most calls go the other way. On MISO Central, the region we watch first, both bars clear together about 2.5% of the time. An umpire who calls almost every pitch a ball is not being difficult; those are the pitches. The point of publishing the calls is that 'almost never' becomes a number someone can be held to, and improvement becomes visible the same way.

None of this is solved by buying certificates after the fact. A renewable-energy certificate says a clean megawatt-hour existed somewhere on the grid, sometime that year. It was never designed to say that your training run, on this Tuesday, in this building, ran inside a clean window, and it says nothing at all about water. That per-job, both-costs answer is the layer we are building.

The meter reads public federal grid data, delayed by several hours to a day, and says so on every surface it touches. Nothing here is real-time, and nothing here is a guess dressed as a measurement.

Clean energy needed its certification layer before it could be bought, required, and bragged about honestly. We think clean compute is next, and we are building the part it cannot happen without.
